What is a BCBA?
A BCBA (Board Certified Behavior Analyst) is a graduate-level clinician trained in Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), the science of learning and behavior. BCBAs support individuals by teaching meaningful skills, improving communication and independence, and reducing behaviors that interfere with daily life, safety, or learning.
What is a CCLS?
A CCLS (Certified Child Life Specialist) is a clinically trained professional who supports the developmental, emotional, and psychosocial needs of children and families experiencing medical or stressful life events through evidence-based interventions, play, and education.
Where can I find a CCLS?
You can traditionally find CCLSs in pediatric hospitals, but you may also find them in schools, clinics, funeral homes, hospice centers, child advocacy centers, and private practice!
What is ABA therapy?
Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is an evidence-based approach that uses the science of learning and behavior to teach meaningful skills, increase independence, and support communication, social, adaptive, and coping abilities. ABA therapy is traditionally applied with autistic children, however; the science of ABA applies to everyone!
Why combine ABA and Child Life?
Combining ABA and Child Life allows for a more holistic, developmentally informed approach that supports both skill development and emotional wellbeing through play, connection, evidence-based strategies, and child-centered care.
Are your resources only for autistic children?
No. While many resources are designed with autistic children in mind, the strategies and supports may also benefit children with developmental differences, medical needs, behavioral challenges, anxiety, ADHD, and other support needs. Resources from The Child Life BCBA can be used with anyone.
How do I become a BCBA?
To become a BCBA, you will need a masters degree, ABA coursework, and 2000 supervised hours under a BCBA. Most people gain their supervision hours as a Registered Behavior Technician, student analyst, or other direct service. After that, you will need to pass the BCBA exam. How do I become a CCLS?
To become a CCLS, you will need a bachelor's degree, child life coursework, and a 600 hour internship under a CCLS. Most internship sites have their own requirements for qualification (I.e. volunteer hours, practicum, masters degree, etc) as internship spots are competitive and limited per hospital. After completion of your 600 hour child life internship, you will need to pass the Child Life Certification Exam. No. At this point in time, I do not offer official mentoring services for candidates seeking to become a BCBA and/or CCLS.
